Answer to Problem 1RQ

During the Neogene Period, the spread of grassy woodlands resulted in the evolution of many animal species. The evolution of animal species provided a way for mammals to become modernized during the Neogene Period.

Explanation of Solution

Many Neogene mammal groups became modernized because of the spread of grassy woodlands. Several herbivorous groups, such as antelope, cattle, and horses, evolved many species that were well adapted to withstand the external conditions. The adaptive features of evolved species included the ability to run long distance over open terrain and the presence of molar teeth that could withstand considerable wear from phytoliths.

The groups of rodents also increased as they were adapted for burrowing in open terrain. The diversification of herbivores in savannahs and woodlands promoted the success of fast-running carnivores. These carnivores such as hyenas, lions, cheetahs, and long-legged dogs were well adapted for attacking herbivores in open country.

Suppose you are visiting the equator. It is noon. The Sun is at its highest point in the sky for the day, which is directly over your head. You call a friend on the phone, and she says it is also noon where she is but the Sun is not directly overhead at that location and time. It is a little lower in the sky for her. Compare the longitude and latitude of your location with the longitude and latitude of your friend's location. Are they alike or different? How do you know?
