There is certain internal energy in every material. The atoms or molecules are connected as a single entity in the substance by a strong attractive force. The atoms are held more specifically as two masses associated with spring at either end.

Thermal expansion is the behavior of matter in response to changes in its shape, area and volume.

As the substance temperatures increase, the internal energy increases, forcing the atoms or molecules to vibrate back and forth. The net vibration of the atoms should be so large that the material might lose its shape.
