Chapter 19, Problem 19.3VP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: On the basis of standard potentials given in Appendix 6, the identification of cathode and anode electrode is to be stated. The direction of electron flow is to be indicated.

Concept introduction: Voltaic cell is a type of electrochemical cell which converts the chemical energy to electrical energy. This chemical energy generates by processing the redox reaction. Redox reaction is the combination of two half reactions. One half is known as reduction half while other is oxidation half.

Electrons always flow from anode to cathode.

Platinum electrode is an inert electrode and it is basically a standard hydrogen electrode. It is coated with platinum black. Hydrogen gas is bubbled through it.

To determine: The identification of cathode and anode electrode on the basis of standard potentials given in Appendix 6; the direction of electron flow.
