Chapter 18.1, Problem 6SCP

Explanation of Solution

“mod” hash function and chaining:

  • This type of storing system is preferred over array implementation as it takes care of the issues faced in implementing the array sorting.
  • With the use of “mod” hash function, it is easy to store the elements in the respective indexes.
  • The index values of the values are derived with the use of “mod” function.
  • In this method, the element value is sent to the index that is derived by modding the element’s value by the array capacity.
  • Example: if the length of the array is given as “10” and the element that has to be stored is “23” then, the value “23” is inserted at index 3.
  • In this case, the negative values are assigned by finding out the absolute value of the element and then assigning it to its mod value.
  • Collision is one of the risks faced in this method, which occurs when two or more values are to be inserted at the same index value...
