Chapter 18, Problem 84IP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Reason for why electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction occurs at C2 position rather than at C3 position in furan has to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

  • Electrophiles are electron deficient species. In Electrophilic substitution reaction a group or atom in a compound is replaced by electrophile. This kind of reaction occurs predominantly in aromatic compounds. Electrophilic substitution reactions of aromatic compounds are known as aromatic electrophilic substitution reactions.
  • The aromatic five-membered heterocycles all undergo electrophilic substitution, by means of a universal reactivity order: pyrrole >furan> thiophene > benzene. The reaction situation proves plainly the better reactivity of furan compared with thiophene.
  • While the electrophile attacks C3, together furan and pyrrole intermediates will contain two significance structures, on the other hand, stipulation substitution is at the alpha position (C2 or C5) reaction intermediates will have three significance structures.

An open vessel containing water stands in a laboratory measuring 5.0 m x 5.0 m x 3.0 m at 25 °C ; the vapor pressure (vp) of water at this temperature is 3.2 kPa. When the system has come to equilibrium, what mass of water will be found in the air if there is no ventilation? Repeat the calculation for open vessels containing benzene (vp = 13.1 kPa) and mercury (vp = 0.23 Pa)
