Chapter 18, Problem 3RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Difference between the terms isotope and nuclide has to be determined

Concept Introduction:

When two or more than two forms of the same element which contain equal numbers of protons but differ in the number of neutrons in their nuclei and therefore they possess similar chemical properties, but different relative atomic mass but then those species are known as isotopes. Mass numbers of isotopes differ from each other but atomic numbers are the same. For example, isotopes of carbon are C612, C613 and C614.

Word nuclide was first used by Truman P. Kohman. A nuclide is an atomic species that contains a specific number of neutrons and protons. It is also characterized by its specific nuclear energy state. For example, C613 is a nuclide with 6 protons and 7 neutrons.
