Young women are more at risk for eating disorders because Western cultural norms stress physical attractiveness as more important for women. Another reason is the differing ideal body image for men and women that is presented by the culture through media. Eating disorders are rooted in shame and a need to feel control over one's body, and they can lead to very dangerous or even lethal behavior patterns.
