Explanation of Solution

Terms to which acronyms TIN, DEM, DTM apply are:

  1. TIN− Triangulated Irregular Network - The GIS community has been using triangular irregular networks (TIN) for many years and is a digital means of representing surface morphology. TINs are a form of digital geographical data based on vectors and are built by triangulating a set of vertices (points). The vertices are linked to a series of edges to form a triangle network. There are different methods of interpolation to form these triangles such as Delaunay triangulation or distance ordering. Arc GIS supports the Delaunay triangulation method.
  1. DEM− Digital Elevation Model- The digital elevation model (DEM) is the digital representation and elevation of the land surface in relation to any reference data. DEM is often used to refer to any topographic surface digital representation. DEM is the simplest form of digital topography representation. DEMs are used to determine terrain characteristics such as lift at any point, slope and aspect.
  1. DTM− Digital Terrain Model- A Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is a DEM in which terrain data has been further enhanced with break lines, creating greater accuracy as it contains additional information defining terrain in areas where Lidar data alone is unable to do the job effectively.

A continuous foundation is shown in Figure 1. If the load eccentricity, e = 0.5 meter. Determine the ultimate load Qult per unit length of the foundation. Use Mayerhof’s effective area method. Given B = 2 meter, Df = 2.0 meter , ϕ = 40 , c’ = 0 kN/m3, γ = 16.5 kN/m3 . Calculate also the Factor of Safety for the shallow foundation.
A simply supported beam is subjected to the end couples (bending is about the strong axis) and the axial load shown in the figure below. These moments and axial load are from service loads and consist of equal parts dead load and live load. Lateral support is provided only at the ends. Neglect the weight of the beam and investigate this member as a beam-column. Use Fy that P40 k and M = 68 ft-k.
