Chapter 17.9, Problem 24WDL
Summary Introduction

To explain: Whether calcitonin decreases or increases blood calcium level.

Concept introduction: The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland and is enclosed within a connective tissue capsule. The thyroid gland is located near the neck. The parafollicular cells are the types of endocrine cells present within the thyroid gland. These cells are found around the follicular cells (simple cuboidal epithelial cells found in the follicular wall of the thyroid.). The hormone calcitonin is synthesized and released by these parafollicular cells.
