Concept introduction: The ligand is the species that contains lone pair of electrons and is bonded to the metal in the complex ion within the coordination sphere.
The complex ion in the coordination complex is the ion that is present within the square bracket that represents the coordination sphere and the counter ion is the ion present outside the coordination sphere.
Rules of naming of coordination complex is,
- Cation is named before anion with space between them.
- The name of the coordination compound cationic, anionic or neutral begins with the name of the ligand first in the alphabetical followed by the name of the metal with the oxidation number in roman in the parenthesis.
- The prefix di, tri, tetra, etc. is added before the ligand, if more than one ligand is present.
- The prefixes for the ligand other than monodentate are bis, tris, tetrakis, pentakis, etc.
- Name of the anionic ligands end with “o”.
- The name of the metal ion ends with “ate” in anionic complex.
