Chapter 17, Problem 1ACTQ
Summary Introduction
To determine: The ways to minimize the risks associated with nutrient–drug interactions.
Concept introduction: Nutrient–drug interactions are the reactions between a medicine or drug and one or more nutrients. These interactions may lead to interference in drug effectiveness or nutrient imbalances. Both drugs and nutrients can alter absorption,
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
There are certain risks associated with nutrient–drug interactions. These may be due to prolonged usage of drugs, different combinations of drugs that are used, or due to poor nutrition status. The risks can be minimized as follows:
- The drug formulations should be checked and be taken as prescribed either on empty stomach or with food. It may alter the absorption.
- The dairy products shall be taken before or after 2 hours of taking medications.
- The alcohol consumption shall be limited.
- Some drugs require avoidance of consumption of grape juice.

I don't sure if I answer these questions correctly. Hope someone can give me confirmation and explain to me how enzymes will be affected by bioloigcs? My answer so far: The three common classes of drug targets are; receptors, nucleic acid, and enzymes. As a target for biologics, the least important will be a nucleic acid, and the most important will be receptor and second enzymes. Biologic drugs such as monoclonal antibodies will bind to the antigens, which are overexpressed receptor that need to be deactivated. In this case, the monoclonal antibodies will act as an antagonist and block the ligand from binding to the antigens, which are extensively presented in cancer cells. In addition, it can also affect enzymes by.......?arrow_forward
