Concept introduction
We see a cultural lag evident when there is change present and the nonmaterial culture has not caught up to the material culture.
Explanation of Solution
Suggested response
There have been many advances in the technological world that have allowed us to see changes in material culture. However, there is still a lag when it comes to nonmaterial culture. Think of some ideas in which this may be seen. You might think about the new Gardasil vaccine, stem cell research, in vitro fertilization, life support, or a plethora of others. Technology has developed these advances, but the norms, values, and laws associated with them are not quite fully established.
Consider stem cell research. Research tells us that these cells can help cure certain diseases. However, when the cells are used from an unborn fetus, many will say that this becomes an ethical issue. Also think about how in vitro fertilization allows a couple to have a baby. Now think about how there might be some issues with this type of fertilization. First, not all embryos captured will be used. Some consider this destruction of human embryos. Others have issues with eggs being frozen and stored for future pregnancies. In both cases, there has been advanced technological development but many issues with norms, values, and laws.
