Chapter 16, Problem 1TQ
Summary Introduction

The organisms which contain a nucleus that is encloses it in a membrane are known as eukaryotes. Plants, animals, fungi, and algae are examples of eukaryotic organisms. The DNA (deoxy ribonucleic acid) of eukaryotes is bounded by proteins termed as histones. These organisms are classified under the domain Eukarya. The term ‘eukaryotes’ is derived from a Greek word in which eu means true and karyon means nucleus.

Answer to Problem 1TQ

All the eukaryotic organisms are not multicellular. There are also free living, unicellular eukaryotic organisms.

Therefore, option a is correct.

Explanation of Solution

Justify the reasons for the correct statement:

Most of the eukaryotic organisms are multicellular. Only a few eukaryotes are unicellular. For example, single cell-protists. Therefore, the description that states “they are multicellular” is not true of all eukaryotes.

Option (a) is given as, “They are multicellular”.

Hence, the option (a) is correct.

Justify the reasons for the incorrect statements:

Option (b) is given as, “They have cellular organelles”.

All the eukaryotic organisms contain membrane bound organelles like mitochondria and Golgi bodies. This description is true of all eukaryotes. Hence, it is a wrong answer.

Option (c) is given as, “They have a larger cell size than prokaryotes have”.

The cell size of a eukaryotic organism is complex and larger than the prokaryotic cells.  This description is true of all eukaryotes. Hence, it is a wrong answer.

Option (d) is given as, “They have a true nucleus”.

All the eukaryotic organisms contain a true nucleus. This description is true of all eukaryotes. Hence, it is a wrong answer.

Option (e) is given as, “All of the above are characteristics of all eukaryotes”.

All the eukaryotes are not multicellular therefore, all of the given “options” are not the characteristics of eukaryotes. Hence, it is a wrong answer.

Hence, options (b), (c), (d), and (e) are incorrect.

Conclusion

The given description “the eukaryotes are multicellular” is not true of all eukaryotes.

There are many differences between DNA replication happening during mitosis in a Douglas fir tree growing in the Oregon Cascade Mountains and DNA replication happening during a PCR reaction in a forestry research lab at Oregon State University where the laboratory is amplifying a Simple Sequence Repeat. Complete the following table that compares the two DNA replication events in terms of the primers, the nucleotides, the polymerase, and the target sequence. Additionally, give a general value for the number of copies of the template DNA after one S phase in one cell and after the lab has completed the PCR reaction.
