The disintegration of alpha, beta, and other radioactive particles from unstable nuclei and spontaneous emission of the radioactive wave is termed as radioactivity. In this process, the unstable atoms break down into stable atoms and emit some radiation. The reason behind the instability of the nuclei is the imbalance of proton and neutron in the nuclei.
The sun has been providing thermal energy by the principle of radioactivity. And it has been blowing such radioactive elements in the space from the beginning. This radiate energy provides heat and light to the Earth through radiation. So the concept of radioactivity is a very old concept.
