Chapter 15, Problem S1.2BYB
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason evolution is a core concept of biology.

Introduction:

Evolution is defined as the variation that occurs due to a change in the hereditary characteristics among biological population over successive generations. Evolution causes biodiversity among the species and individual organisms. The variation among the individuals is due to the presence of different hereditary characters that are inherited from their parents.

Explanation of Solution

The theory of natural selection brings evolution in biology. It causes variation among the individuals and favors heterozygote population over the homozygous. Heterozygote is formed by sexual reproduction, in which the haploid male and female gametes are united to form zygote and then the offspring are diploid.

The offspring produced inherits the characters from both the parents, but are not the exact copy of their parents. Evolution brings out the hereditary changes. Individuals can survive in different habitats and are able to survive in the changing adaptations and produce offspring. Evolution brings stability among the individuals.

Conclusion

Evolution is caused by mutations, hybridization, and inbreeding depressions that occurs among the species. Natural selection is responsible for causing evolution.
