Concept Introduction:

Positron Emission Tomography is a nuclear medicinal diagnosis tool or technique to observe the metabolic pathway of the biologically active molecules in the body as an aid to the diagnosis of a disease. Usually, radioactive nuclides having short half-life that emit positron and are normally used in the PET scan. They are introduced into the body on a biologically active molecule called a radioactive tracer. A positron emits in the tissue and collides with an electron in the nearby tissue. This results in the formation of two gamma rays, which are detected by the gamma ray detector. The location of the collision can be determined by tracking back of the paths of the two gamma rays.
