Chapter 15, Problem 27P

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Whether Quiana is a nylon or a polyester should be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Polymers:

Monomers combine together to form polymers.  Monomers are the repeating units of small molecules which link together to form polymers and the process is called as polymerization.

Two types of polymers:

  • Synthetic and biopolymers.
  • DNA is an example for biopolymer and these type of polymers are synthesized by cells.
  • Polymers synthesized by scientists are called synthetic polymers and some examples are nylon, polyester etc.

Polyamides:

  • Nylon is a polyamide and is formed from the polymerization of 6-aminohexanoylchloride and hence it is called nylon-6
  • Nylon 66 is formed from adipic acid and 1,6-hexanediamine which have 6 carbons each.
  • Polyamide belongs to the class of step-growth polymer.
  • Quiana is an example for a synthetic polyamide condensation polymer
