The common features are shared by most of the cell signaling systems. Extracellular signals are produced by other signaling cells. The receptor proteins are located on the target cells. Extracellular signaling molecules bind to the cell-surface receptors and generate a conformational modification in the receptor. This change, in turn, results in the intracellular signal transduction processes. It finally modifies the function, cellular metabolism, or gene expression. These intracellular signal transduction pathways are evolutionarily extremely conserved.
