Chapter 15, Problem 1MWE
Summary Introduction

Reduced absorption is the most common type of hydrocephalus. This condition occurs when the passages that connects the ventricles are blocked, thereby, preventing the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to its drainage sites present in the subarachnoid space.

Answer to Problem 1MWE

Forming an opening (mouth) in the ventricle is ventriculostomy.

Explanation of Solution

Ventricul/o/stomy: ventricle: organ cavity or chamber that holds or receives fluid; -stoma: mouth.

The word “ventriculostomy” indicates the establishment of an opening in a ventricle. This surgical procedure is especially used in the treatment of hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus occurs as a result of an imbalance existing between the formation and removal of cerebrospinal fluid. Thus, in order to relieve hydrocephalus, an opening is established between the third ventricle (floor) and the interpeduncular cistern. The opening made in the ventricle of the brain is then used to drain the CSF.
