To determine:
The name of accessory gland, secretion of which is oily in nature is:
(a) Conjunctiva
(b) Lachrymal gland
(c) Tarsal gland
Answer to Problem 1MC
Solution:
(c) Tarsal glands
Explanation of Solution
The meibomian gland or tarsal gland is a unique type of sebaceous gland that is present in the eyelids inside the tarsal plate. The main role is to provide meibum. The meibum is an oily substance that prevents the evaporation of the eye’s tear film. It also prevents tear spillage on the cheeks and dysfunction of this gland causes dry eyes. The conjunctiva helps in lubricating the eye by releasing mucus. It prevents the entry of the microbes in the eye. The lacrimal gland secretes the tear film in the eye. The tears flow inside the canals that are attached to the lacrimal sac.
