Transverse wave is a wave in which particles vibrates in the direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation of wave.
Explanation of Solution
Waves can be categorized in two types namely:-
- Transverse Waves
- Longitudinal waves
In both these waves particles motion is different as compared to the propagation of the wave.
Transverse wave is a wave in which particles vibrates in the direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation of wave. In this types of waves, the motion of waves form crest or trough while propagating. The crest is a region where wave has the peak value of the wave while the trough is region where wave has the lowest value.
Crest and troughs are formed alternatively as the wave propagates.
Conclusion:
Thus, Transverse wave is a wave in which particles vibrates in the direction of propagation of wave.

A string tied to one end and when shaken from the other end the wave formed is a transverse wave.
Explanation of Solution
When a string tied at one end is shaken from other end, and then the propagation of wave through string depicts longitudinal waves.
The motion of particle of string is in up and down direction while the wave propagates in the horizontal direction which is similar to the longitudinal wave in which particle vibrates perpendicular to the direction of propagation of wave.
The crest and troughs are also formed alternatively during the propagation of wave.
