Interpretation:

The type of neurotransmitters that includes γ- aminobutyric acid and glycine has to be given.

Concept Introduction:

Those chemicals that carry messages or signals from a nerve cell to a target cell that may be another nerve cell or a muscle cell are called as neurotransmitters.

Based on their dependency on the receptor they bind to, they are classified into,

  • Excitatory:  The function of excitatory neurotransmitters is to activate receptors on the postsynaptic membrane and enhance the effects of the actin potential.  It triggers depolarization, increasing the likelihood of a response.
  • Inhibitory:  The function of inhibitory neurotransmitters is to prevent an action potential.  It triggers hyperpolarization, decreasing the likelihood of a response.
