Concept explainers
The source of energy that allows motion of gases in the atmosphere and the source that prevents atmospheric gases from flying off into space.
Answer to Problem 1RCQ
Solution:
- The source of the energy of the gases that allows the motion in the atmosphere is solar energy.
- The gravitational pull of the earth prevents the gases from flying off into space.
Explanation of Solution
The gases are continuously roaming in the atmosphere, the ultimate source of energy for all the gases that allows them to roam in the atmosphere is solar energy. Gases are constantly receiving energy from the sun which increases their kinetic energy and moves in the atmosphere.
The gases have kinetic energy, but gases cannot leave the earth's atmosphere because earth constantly pulls the gases with gravitational force of very higher magnitude. The gravitational pull prevents the gases from leaving the earth's atmosphere.
Conclusion:
Gases receive energy from the sun but cannot leave the earth's atmosphere because of gravitational pull.
