Answer to Problem 1CR

Rare-earth metals have a significant role in major technologies that support today’s lifestyles and economies. They are used in LCD flat screens, LED bulbs, batteries, atomic bombs, and so on.

Explanation of Solution

Rare-earth metals are used in computers and television sets to manufacture liquid crystal display flat screens, energy-efficient compact fluorescent and LED lightbulbs, solar cells, fiber-optic cables, cell phones, and digital cameras. They are also used in the making of batteries and motors for electric and hybrid-electric cars, catalytic converters in car exhaust systems, jet engines, and the powerful magnets in wind turbine generators. In addition, they are used in missile guidance systems, smart bombs, aircraft electronics, and satellites.

It is not possible to develop the current versions of cleaner energy technology and other high-tech products that will be major sources of economic growth and profits during this century without affordable supplies of these metals. It is essential that these metals are needed to maintain the military strength of nations.
