Answer to Problem 14.1.6RE

The sample mean of unemployment rates is 5.78, and the sample mean of the average weekly benefits is 320.9.

There is no large difference between the sample mean and population mean of unemployment rates and also there is large difference between the sample mean and population mean of average weekly benefits

Explanation of Solution

Procedure for selecting 10 states using systematic sampling.

  • There are 50 states out of which 10 to be selected.
  • The rule for systematic sample is selecting every fifth observation after selecting the first observation. Because it is obtained by dividing 50 by 10.
  • Select any number from ‘1’ to ‘ 5 ’ at random. In this case ‘1’ was Selected so, next number is 6 and so on. That is , 1 2 3 4 5 67 8 9 10 11 … 50
  • The selected states are as follows
AL CO HI KS MA MT NM OK SD VA

The corresponding unemployment rates and average weekly benefits of the 10 states are,

S NO States Unemployment rates (%) Average weekly benefit ($)
1 AL 6.5 207
6 CO 6.8 356
11 HI 4.8 424
16 KS 5.4 341
21 MA 7.1 424
26 MT 5.6 290
31 NM 6.9 303
36 OK 5.4 293
41 SD 3.8 276
46 VA 5.5 295
Total 57.8 3,209

Thesample mean of unemployment rates is,

Samplemean of unemployment rates= (sum of observations of unemployment rate in sample )Number of observations in sample=(6.5+6.8+4.8+5.4+7.1+5.6+6.9+5.4+3.8+5.5)10=5.78

The sample mean of the average weekly benefits is,

Samplemean of the average weekly benefits =(sum of observations of average weekly benefits in sample)Number of observations in sample=(207+356+424+341+424+290+303+293+276+295)10=320.9

The population mean of unemployment rate is,

Populationmeanofunemploymentrates=(6.5+6.5+8.0+7.5+8.9+6.8+7.8+........+6.7+4.6)50=336.450=6.728

The population mean of weekly average benefits is,

Meanofaverageweeklybenefits=(207+250+221+289+301+356+345+...+275+276+359)50=15,12250=302.44

Comparison of means:

The mean of unemployment rates is 5.78, population mean of unemployment rate is 6.728, the mean of the average weekly benefits is 320.9, andpopulation mean of weekly average benefits is 302.44.

It is clear that there is no large difference between the sample mean and population mean of unemployment rates and also there islarge difference between the sample mean and population mean of average weekly benefits.
