Chapter 14, Problem 14.12P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The complete MO energy diagram for benzene similar to Figures 14-6 and 14-12, including the MOs of σ symmetry, is to be drawn.

Concept introduction:

Frost's method is used to obtain the relative energies of the π MOs of a completely conjugated cyclic π system. The benzene hexagon is oriented so that one vertex is pointed directly downward. Each of the six vertices then represents the energy of π molecular orbitals ( π1, π2, π3, π4*, π5*, π6*). The center of the polygon represents the energy of each noninteracting p atomic orbitals. Benzene has π molecular orbitals 1) with the lowest energy and a pair of degenerate orbitals, π2 and π3, at somewhat higher energy. The second pair of degenerate orbitals are  π4*, π5*, at still higher energy. Finally, the π6* orbital has the highest energy.
