Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
Whether chloromethane is more soluble in chloroform or methanol is to be determined. Also, the forces that are most important is to be identified.
Concept introduction:
The solution is a homogenous mixture that is formed from two or more substances. It consists of two components, solute, and solvent. The substance that is present in a smaller amount and is dissolved in the other substance is called solute. The solvent is that substance which is present in a larger amount and it dissolves solute in itself. The solubility of the solute in the solvent is governed by the principle like dissolves like.
The solubility of any solute in the solvent is determined by the intermolecular forces. The stronger the intermolecular forces between the solute-solvent molecules than solute-solute molecules the more will be the solubility.
(b)
Interpretation:
Whether pentanol is more soluble in water or hexane is to be determined. Also, the forces that are most important is to be identified.
