In the mid-1950s segregation was outlawed in schools, which delighted social psychologists because they believed that desegregation would help increase minority children's self-esteem and reduce the rate of prejudice in schools. This perspective is called the contact hypothesis. However, early attempts at desegregation did not successfully decrease prejudice, which happened for a specific reason.
