Water expands significantly when it freezes: a volume increase at about 9% occurs. As a result of this expansion and because of the formation and growth of crystals as water freezes anywhere from 10% to 30% of biological cells are burst when animal or plant material is frozen. Discuss the implications of this cell damage for the prospect of preserving human bodies by freezing so that they can he thawed at some future date when it is hoped that all diseases are curable.

- There are two important isotopes of uranium, U235 and U238 ; these isotopes are nearly identical chemically but have different atomic masses. Only U235 is very useful in nuclear reactors. Separating the isotopes is called uranium enrichment (and is often in the news as of this writing, because of concerns that some countries are enriching uranium with the goal of making nuclear weapons.) One of the techniques for enrichment, gas diffusion, is based on the different molecular speeds of uranium hexafluoride gas, UF6 . (a) The molar masses of U235 and U238F6 are 349.0 g/mol and 352.0 g/mol, respectively. What is the ratio of their typical speeds vrms ? (b) At what temperature would their typical speeds differ by 1.00 m/s? (c) Do your answers in this problem imply that this technique may be difficult?arrow_forwardAn aluminum rod 0.500 m in length and with a cross-sectional area of 2.50 cm2 is inserted into a thermally insulated vessel containing liquid helium at 4.20 K. The rod is initially at 300 K. (a) If one-half of the rod is inserted into the helium, how many liters of helium boil off by the time the inserted half cools to 4.20 K? Assume the upper half does not yet cool. (b) If the circular surface of the upper end of the rod is maintained at 300 K, what is the approximate boil-off rate of liquid helium in liters per second after the lower half has reached 4.20 K? (Aluminum has thermal conductivity of 3 100 W/m K at 4.20 K; ignore its temperature variation. The density of liquid helium is 125 kg/m3.)arrow_forwardAn aluminum rod 0.500 m in length and with a cross sectional area of 2.50 cm2 is inserted into a thermally insulated vessel containing liquid helium at 4.20 K. - Most automobiles have a coolant reservoir to catch radiator fluid than may overflow when 1he engine is hot. A radiator is made of copper and is filled to its 16.0L capacity when at 10.0C. What volume of radiator fluid will overflow when the radiator and fluid reach their 95.0C operating temperature, given that the fluid’s volume coefficient of expansion is =400106/C ? Note that this coefficient is approximate, because most car radiators have operating temperatures of greater than 95.0C.arrow_forwardYou buy an "airtight" bag of potato chips packaged at sea level, and take the chips on an airplane flight. When you take the potato chips out of your "carry-on" bag, you notice it has noticeably "puffed up." Airplane cabins are typically pressurized at 0.90 atm, and assuming the temperature inside an airplane is about the same as inside a potato chip processing plant, by what percentage has the bag "puffed up" in comparison to when it was packaged?
