Some traits of plants and animals depend on inheritance of a single gene. This is called Mendelian inheritance, after Gregor Mendel (1822-1884). Each of us has an ABO blood type, which describes whether two characteristics called A and B are present. Every human being has two blood type alleles (gene forms), one inherited from our mother and one from our father. Each of these alleles can be A, B, or O. Which two we inherit determines our blood type. Here is a table that shows what our blood type is for each combination of two alleles.

We inherit each of a parent's two alleles with probability 0.5. We inherit independently from our mother and father.
What is the probability that both children have different blood types?
Each of us has an ABO blood type. We get this blood type by inheriting two alleles-one from our
mother and one from our father. Each of these alleles can be A, B, or O and the combination of the
two that we inherit determines our blood type. The table below explains the combinations of
alleles and the blood types those combinations produce.

Harper has alleles A and O (therefore blood type A) and Taylor has alleles A and B (therefore blood
type AB). On your own paper, fill in the chart of the possible combinations of alleles that their
children could inherit:

Taylor
A
B
allele from Harper
A
O
Then list the possible blood types their children can have and the probabilities of each type.
A hypothetical population has two alleles for a gene: A and a. In a random sample of 100 individuals, 20 are homozygous for a (aa), 50 are homozygous for A (AA), and 30 are heterozygous (Aa). What is the frequency of a?

- Twenty volunteers at a cold research institute caught a cold after having been exposed to various cold viruses. Ten of the volunteers were randomly selected to receive tablets containing 1 gram of vitamin C. These tablets were taken four times a day. The control group, consisting of the other 10 volunteers, was given placebo tablets that looked and tasted exactly like the vitamin C ones. This was continued for each volunteer until a doctor, who did not know whether one volunteer was receiving vitamin C or the placebo, decided that the volunteer was no longer suffering from the cold. The length of time the cold lasted was then recorded. At the end of the experiment, the following data resulted: The average length of cold for the n1 = 10 people treated with vitamin C is with a standard deviation of s1 = 0.76 The average length of cold for the n2 = 10 people receiving the placebo is with a standard deviation of s2 = 0.85 Determine the value of the pooled standard deviation . Dangerous levels of mercury are classified when they reach beyond 6.5 parts per million. A random sample of 25 lobsters in the region were tested and the data is shown in the stemplot. A random sample of 160 subjects with allergies was selected for the study. The new "improved" Brand I medication was randomly assigned to 80 subjects, and the current Brand C medication was randomly assigned to the other 80 subjects. 14 of the 80 patients with Brand I reported drowsiness, and 22 of the 80 patients with Brand C reported drowsiness. She randomly assigns 22 rats to a treatment or control group (11 rats in each group). Rats in the treatment group are given the plant compound daily for a week, while rats in the control group are given a placebo. Over the course of the week, the researcher monitors the total number of calories consumed by all 22 rats. All the rats are kept separate from one another, but in their typical environments, for the duration of the week. The researcher’s null hypothesis is that the rats given the plant compound consume the same number of calories as the rats given a placebo. Since the rats in the treatment group are independent of the rats in the control group, the researcher realizes that the design of her study is an independent-measures design. The researcher knows that the total calories consumed by a rat over the course of a week are normally distributed. However, the researcher is not…arrow_forwardScientist Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) is often called the "father of modern genetics" and is famous for his work involving the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants. Suppose that the genes controlling the color of peas are Y for yellow and y for green. Each plant has two genes, one from the female (seed) and one from the male (pollen). The Y gene is dominant, and therefore a plant with genes YY will have yellow peas, a plant with genes Yy or yY will have yellow peas, and a plant with genes yy will have green peas. If a plant with two yellow genes (YY) is crossed with a plant with two green genes (yy), the result is four hybrid offspring with genotypes Yy. The offspring will be yellow, but will carry the recessive green gene. Parent 2 У Yy Yy Yy Yy y Parent 1 Suppose that both parent pea plants are hybrids with genotype Yy. a. - A nutritionist randomly divided 15 cyclists into three groups of 5 cyclists each. Cyclists in the first group were given vitamin supplements, which they took with their meals for the next three weeks. The second group was instructed to eat certain types of high-fiber whole grain cereals for the next three weeks. Cyclists in the third group ate the same way they normally eat. After three weeks, each cyclist rode 6 miles, from which the following times were recorded: Vitamin group 15.6 16.4 17.2 15.5 16.3 Fiber group 17.1 16.3 15.8 16.4 16.0 Control group 15.9 17.2 16.4 15.4 16.8 Is the data consistent with the hypothesis that vitamin supplements or fiber cereals do not affect the speed of cyclists? Use a 1% significance level.arrow_forwardA new cream was developed to reduce the irritation caused by poison ivy. To test the effectiveness, researchers put an ad online asking for volunteers to participate in the study. One hundred subjects replied and were informed that one group would receive the new cream and the other would receive a cream with no active ingredient. All 100 subjects were exposed to poison ivy. Fifty were then assigned to the group with the new cream, and 50 were assigned to the group with the cream with no active ingredient. After three days, technicians recorded the subjects’ level of irritation. Which of the following would benefit this experiment the most? This experiment should be single blind. The subjects will not know which treatment they are receiving to control for the placebo effect, but the technicians need to know which group received the new cream. This experiment should be double blind. Neither the subject nor the technician knows which group is receiving the new cream to control for…arrow_forwardAccording to U.S. government statistics, mononucleosis (mono) is four times more common among college students than the rest of the population. Blood tests for the disease are not 100% accurate. Assume that the following table of data was obtained regarding students who came to a certain school's health center complaining of tiredness, a sore throat, and slight fever. Has Mono Doesn't Have Mono Totals Positive Blood Test 19 44 63 Negative Blood Test 46 29 75 Totals 65 73 138 If a student is selected from this group, find the probability that the test is positive, given that the student has mono.arrow_forward
