While union representatives may recruit members to join the union, unions form to protect workers from the actions of management. Unions are led by workers and help protect the shared interests of the workers (Greene, 2023). They can help improve working conditions, set limits on working hours, and help employees receive fair pay (Greene, 2023). Employees would not feel the need to join a union or help organize a union if the employer already offered decent working conditions. Fighting an employer alone can seem like a tremendous job and even discourage an employee from speaking out against any wrongdoing.
