Summary Introduction
A flexible, long, and cylindrical structure that conduit between placenta and fetus or developing embryo is called umbilical cord. It is also referred to as funiculus umbilicalis, navel string, and birth cord. The umbilical cord is genetically and physiologically a portion of the fetus. It normally consists of one umbilical vein, two umbilical arteries, buried inside Wharton’s jelly. The nutrient-rich, oxygenated blood is supplied to the fetus by the umbilical vein.
