Concept introduction:

A positive value of reaction constant indicates that the transition state has more negative charge than the reactant. This transition state will be stabilized by electron withdrawing substituents. Electron withdrawing substituents will increase the reaction rate while electron donating substituents will decrease the reaction rate.

A negative value of reaction constant indicates that the transition state has more positive charge than the reactant. This transition state will be stabilized by electron donating substituents. Electron donating substituents will increase the reaction rate while electron withdrawing substituents will decrease the reaction rate.
