Interpretation:
The mechanism for the given reaction is to be determined. The compound that reacts at the fastest and the slowest rates are to be determined. The rate ratio of the most reactive to the least reactive is to be calculated.
Concept introduction:
A positive value of reaction constant indicates that the transition state has more negative charge than the reactant. This transition state will be stabilized by electron withdrawing substituents. Electron withdrawing substituents will increase the reaction rate while electron donating substituents will decrease the reaction rate.
A negative value of reaction constant indicates that the transition state has more positive charge than the reactant. This transition state will be stabilized by electron donating substituents. Electron donating substituents will increase the reaction rate while electron withdrawing substituents will decrease the reaction rate.
