It is important to remember that statistics that are given related to the risk of divorce cover groups of people, not individuals. When looking at the statistics, people must realize that they are humans, not numbers. Each person’s own chance of divorce is dependent on that person or couple, not a statistic written on a chart somewhere. From a symbolic interactionist standpoint, if we believe that our marriage is likely to last, there is less of a chance of divorce. However, if we believe that the marriage might fail, we are more likely to leave when things are difficult.
