Concept introduction:

Neurotransmitters are chemical substances which are released by the axon terminals when nerve impulses arrive. These neurotransmitters are stored in synaptic vesicles. These vesicles then fuse with the sending membrane which results in the release of neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft.
