Introduction

Religion is an important social institution because it overflows into a large portion of a society. This is particularly true for those who follow or practice a religion or faith of some kind. Religion is both powerful and influential on both the micro and macro levels. For this issue, there are primarily two schools of thought in the United States. One is that part of religious freedom allows people to believe, or not believe, in any manner they choose. Because of this, there can be no government sanctioned religion – including within the public education system that is funded by the government. On the other hand, people also argue that because there is religious freedom, one should be able to express their religious beliefs anywhere they wish, as long as it is not harmful or disruptive.
