To determine

North Carolina to utilize the wave energy for all of its electricity would it is reasonable?

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The total annual per capita electricity requirement is 15MWhc.

The coastline used wave electricity generation is 5%.

The average efficiency is 20%.

Calculation:

Refer Figure 12.1 in the textbook,

For North Carolina, the wave power is 33 kW/m.

Find the total wave power in the coastline:

Total wave power=Coastlineused×Totallengthofcoastline×Wavepower=0.05×500km×1000m×33kWh/m=8.25×108W

Find the total energy available per year:

Total energy available per year=Total wave power×Averageefficiency=8.25×108W×0.2=165,000,000Whc/h×8,760h/y=1.45×1012Whc/y

Consider the population of North Carolina is 9.53×106.

Find the total annual electricity for the state:

Total annual electricity for the state=Annual per capita electricity requirement×Population=15MWhc×106Whc×9.53×106=1.43×1014Whc

Compared to this total requirement, the wave energy is about 1%. Other sustainable energy approaches may be more benefecial.

Borrow pit soil is being used to fill an 900,00 yd3 of depression. The properties of borrowpit and in-place fill soils obtained from laboratory test results are as follows:• Borrow pit soil: bulk density 105 pcf, moisture content = 8%, and specific gravity = 2.65• In-place fill soil: dry unit weight =120 pcf, and moisture content = 16%(a) How many yd3 of borrow soil is required?(b) What water mass is needed to achieve 16% moisture in the fill soil?(c) What is the in-place density after a long rain?

Calculate the BMs (bending moments) at all the joints of the beam shown in Fig.1 using the slope deflection method, draw the resulting shear force diagran and bending moment diagram. The beam is subjected to an UDL of w=65m. L=4.5m, L1= 1.8m.  Assume the support at C is pinned, and A and B are roller supports.  E = 200 GPa, I = 250x106 mm4.
