The major source of maritime tropical air affecting the United States. Also describe the way in which proximity to this source influence the spatial pattern of thunderstorms.

Answer to Problem 1E
The major source is the Gulf of Mexico. A large number of thunderstorms are developed in this area due to the proximity of the southeast and central United States to this moisture source.
Explanation of Solution
The development of thunderstorms and tornadoes occurs following the forced rise of warm, moist air in an unstable atmosphere. Thunderstorms often considered as air mass thunderstorms or severe thunderstorms based on its formation. The development of some occurs within a warm, moist air mass, whereas others require strong vertical wind shear.
Thunderstorms are occurred most frequently in the United States when maritime tropical air is forced aloft through the process of orographic lifting, frontal lifting, intense surface heating, or convergence of surface air flow.
