Introduction:

Pfiesteria species are tiny heterotrophic dinoflagellates belonging to the family Pfiesteriaceae. They include two main itchyocidal or fish-killing species, namely, Pfiesteria shumwayae and Pfiesteria piscicida. The latter releases toxins, which cause insidious effects on fish epidermis like deep lesions leading tofish death. They then feed on the dead fishes making a vicious self-fueling cycle.
