Summary Introduction

To describe: The etiology and pathophysiology of infectious endocarditis (IE) and pericarditis.

Concept introduction: Pericarditis is the inflammation of any one layer of pericardium. The thin tissue sac that surrounds heart is called as pericardium. The inflammation will cause high fluid accumulation and impairs filling. Endocardium is the inner lining of the heart valves and heart chambers. The inflammation of endocardium is called endocarditis. Infective endocarditis is the type of endocarditis in which the inflammation is caused by the infection.
