The various kinds of interactions that bind a molecule or the attractive forces that hold particle together in the condensed phases are known as intermolecular forces. They can be dispersion, dipole–dipole, ion–dipole, and hydrogen bonding.
Dispersion forces are weak attractive forces that are generated by the positions of electrons in two adjacent atoms (or by movement of electrons in non-polar molecules) by which temporary dipoles are created.
Dipole-dipole interactions are attractive forces that act between polar molecules.
Hydrogen bonding is a type of dipole–dipole interaction. It occurs only in molecules that contain hydrogen atom which is attached to highly electronegative atom such as N, O, and F.
