Answer to Problem 1QR

The rank of events in the order of increasing strength is hurricane, tropical storm, tropical depression, and tropical disturbance.

Explanation of Solution

The disturbance which is caused in the winds due to low pressure that initiates weak wind surfaces and thunderstorms is known as tropical disturbance.

When the winds of the tropical disturbances gain the strength and flow more efficiently around and into the center of the growing storm, it becomes a tropical depression.

The wind with tropical depressions starts to spin with high speeds. When the speed of the wind increases more than 63km/hr, it forms a tropical storm.

When the speed of spinning wind increases further to 119km/hr, then it causes a hurricane.

Therefore, the ranking in the order of increasing strength is hurricane, tropical storm, tropical depression, and tropical disturbance.

Suppose you are visiting the equator. It is noon. The Sun is at its highest point in the sky for the day, which is directly over your head. You call a friend on the phone, and she says it is also noon where she is but the Sun is not directly overhead at that location and time. It is a little lower in the sky for her. Compare the longitude and latitude of your location with the longitude and latitude of your friend's location. Are they alike or different? How do you know?
