Chapter 11, Problem 1A
Summary Introduction

Introduction

Yes, because there are millions of bacteria exist on the earth, only 5,000 bacterial species were identified by microbiologists. Therefore 3,000 species have been listed in Bergey’s manual. Using conventional growth medium to the entire bacterial community cannot be cultivated.  It is a great deal for microbiologists to identify and grow new bacterial species using new tools and techniques. Therefore scientist still need to attempt to grow more new bacterial species.

Microbiomes can be characterized using a number of molecular biology approaches. Which approach would provide a better functional description of a community: metagenomic or metatranscriptomic sequencing? Briefly explain your reasoning.
A large oil spill in the Pacific Ocean is threatening marine life. Scientists charged with cleaning up the spill believe bioremediation is the best option, but they are not sure what type of bacterial species to use in the bioremediation process. To help them in their decision, they have listed the nutritional modes of each species. Given your knowledge of the different nutritional modes of bacteria, which nutritional mode would be most beneficial in bioremediation of the oil spill?
