Chapter 11, Problem 11.1P
To determine

Change in length of steel rod subjected to uniaxial load of 50 lb.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 11.1P

Estimated change in length is 3.397 × 10-4 in.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

Material is Steel, Young’s Modulus Em= 30 x 106 psi, Original Length l = 10 in., Diameter D= ¼ in. = 0.25 in., ForceF = 50 lbf

The Rod Supports the mass so that uniaxial tension is developed. Let Change in length be denoted as dl, we know acceleration due to gravity g = 9.81 m/s2 = 386.088 in/s2

Calculate Area of Rod

A=π×D24A=3.14159× (1/4)24A=0.04909in2

Calculate Stress as

σ=F(pounds)Aσ=500.04909σ=1.019×103psi

Assuming that material is stressed within elastic limit, hence it obeys Hook’s Law. Therefor calculate strain e

σ=Em×εε=σEmε=1.019× 10330× 106ε=3.397×105

Calculate change in length dlε=δlLδl=ε×Lδl=3.397×105×10δl=3.397×104in.

Q2/ Maria has an online shop where she sells hand made paintings and cards. She sells the painting for 50 and the card for 20. It takes her 2 hours to complete 1 painting and 45 minutes to make a single card. She also has a day job and makes paintings and cards in her free time. She cannot spend more than 15 hours a week to make paintings and cards. Additionally, she should make not more than 10 paintings and cards per week. She makes a profit of 25 on painting and 15 on each card. How many paintings and cards should she make each week to maximize her profit.
