Summary Introduction

Introduction

The foundation of attachment theory is that we develop attachment styles as infants based on our relationship with our primary caregivers. We tend to carry that attachment style with us into and throughout our adult lives. Those who have responsive, consistent, and caring caregivers develop a secure attachment style. Infants with a more distant relationship with their primary caregiver develop an avoidant attachment style and are often seen as aloof. Lastly, an anxious/ambivalent attachment style develops when the infant's primary caregiver tends to be inconsistent. Many times, adults with this attachment style fear abandonment and become smothering and needy.
