Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Elon Musk of Space X have taken risks to build to their businesses and been successful at it. The fundamental premise for their success mostly hinges on the ownership of private property and free market forces. For billionaires like them who have made their wealth mostly based on their own effort and perseverance, would it be fair to impose high income tax on them to redistribute their wealth to help the poor?
Many economists believe that a more effective way to supplement the income of the poor is through a negative income tax. Under this scheme, everyone reports his or her income to the government; individuals and families earning a higher income will pay a tax based on that income, while low-income individuals and families receive a subsidy, or negative tax. Assume that the only qualification required to receive a tax credit is low income.
Under the most recent tax reform act, Congress doubled the exemption for the estate tax while retaining the gift tax rules. Proponents of the estate tax says it allows the wealthy to create multi - generational wealth which does not benefit the country economically. They also argue that it creates family empires. Opponents of the estate tax claim that paying the estate tax causes many families to have to sell family businesses in order to pay the estate tax and that in most cases taxes have already been paid on the accumulated wealth that is being passed on. Describe your position on the estate tax and why it should be maintained, increased, decreased or eliminated according to your beliefs.

Jacques: I feel that government involvement in the economy should be reduced because government programs cause more harm than good. Alexander (1898-1989) was the first black woman in the U.S. to receive a PhD in Economics (1921). Alexander wrote and spoke extensively on economic and racial justice. She emphasized that black Americans experienced disproportionate income losses during the Great Depression of the 1930s relative to white Americans and that income inequality may have contributed to the Depression: Our economy went into a downward spiral… because our distribution of income was such that the masses had no income to purchase goods and the investors refused to place their income and capital in industry because there was no one with money to buy the products. (Alexander 1945 as cited in Banks 2008). She also objected to high unemployment: She saw it as leading to heightened discrimination against black workers and argued in favor of “the right of all individuals to earn a decent living” (circa 1930s/40s as cited in Banks 2008). - Explain what is meant by urban bias. What are the major effects of urban bias?arrow_forward35. A researcher observes that, on average, the number of divorces in cities with major league baseball teams is larger than in cities without major league baseball teams. The most plausible explanation for this observed association is a) the presence of a major league baseball team causes the number of divorces to rise (perhaps husbands are spending too much time at the park). b) the high number of divorces is responsible for the presence of a major league baseball team (ore single men means potentially more fans at the ballpark, making it attractive for an owner to relocate to such cities). c) the association is due to common response (major league teams tend to be in large cities with more people hence a greater number of divorces). d) the observed association is purely coincidental. It is implausible to believe the observed association could be anything other than accidental.arrow_forwardArticle Summary According to the U.S. Census Bureau, income inequality in the United States was "significantly higher" in 2018 than in 2017, with the gap between the richest and poorest households the largest it has been in the last 50 years. At the same time, median U.S. income hit its highest level ever, with a national economy experiencing low unemployment and more than 10 years of consecutive GDP growth. According to Rutgers University Professor William M. Rogers III, the most troubling aspect of this report is that it "clearly illustrates the inability of the current economic expansion, the longest on record, to lessen inequality." The Census Bureau report also states that the nation's poverty rate fell in 14 states and Puerto Rico, and that for the 25 largest U.S. cities, the poverty rate either remained the same or fell in 2018.
