Chapter 10, Problem 1RQE
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

I am a member of a social media based group of people who are keeping alive the old ways of shaving, using techniques and equipment out of the ordinary, those used by people in years past. Rather than the plastic razors cartridges marketed in the mainstream, members of this group may use vintage or modern razors that use a single blade, or even straight razors.

Explanation of Solution

Answer and explanation:

(This question requires a subjective answer, this is an example.)

An outsider seeking to study an online traditional shaving group would do well to read many of the daily posts members use to discuss their equipment of choice and different techniques they use to shave. A researcher should also read various blogs describing reasons for returning to these older methods in terms of improved skin care, and spending some quality time shaving as a way of self-care. He or she could also watch videos posted by people sharing their techniques or reviewing products in order to build a sense belonging among members. A researcher could make contacts with some of the relatively new companies emerging to provide quality shaving soaps, pre-shave and aftershave products to support the movement toward these methods. A questionnaire could be made to identify reasons for shaving this way, and attitudes about personal care and grooming. Such research could focus on patterns in the responses. An overview of the postings on social media would reveal patterns of communication, for example, in this particular group, hot-button political issues of the day are avoided so that members of all ideological backgrounds can share their enjoyment of this type of shaving and collecting.
