The basic materials used to produce mortar.
Answer to Problem 1RQ
The basic materials required to produce mortar are cementitious materials, sand, hydrated lime, water and admixtures.
Explanation of Solution
Mortar is used to bind the masonry units into an integral structure. Mortars were initially made of mud and sand available on the site but later developments in mortar utilized a combination of lime and sand for the strength development. Mortar is composed of cementitious materials, clean graded mortar sand, clean water and admixtures. The composition of mortar varies according to the use. It may consist of Portland cement or masonry cement, sand, hydrated lime and water for any general masonry applications whereas for special applications addition of admixtures is required so that compressive and tensile strength can be increased.
