Sex and gender are often conflated, but refer to very different characteristics. Sex refers to the anatomy and biological processes that distinguish men and women, for example differences in genitalia or chromosomes. Gender is not a physical difference, but behavior expectations created by society. Socially created standards for masculine and feminine behaviors comprise a person's gender, and are a part of their psychological identity.
