Introduction:

Hydrolysis of the fatty acids by the alkali (NaOH) is termed as saponification. The resulted products of this reaction are the salts and glycerol, which are called soaps. Soaps may be of two types: hard soap or soft soaps. Hard soaps are the common bar soaps used for bathing, these are the sodium salts of the long-chain fatty acids. Soft soaps are in the form of semisolids or paste, these soaps are potassium salts of the long-chain fatty acids.
